In May, Serbia officially became a member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council with the support of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). The membership agreement provides support in adapting to global standards of sustainability in tourism, in accordance with the country’s specific needs, as it was published on the UNDP website.
The goal is to promote Serbia throughout the world as a country of sustainable tourism and hospitality.
Sustainable tourism implies the development of tourist destinations in a way that contributes to the protection of the environment, the economic progress of small and medium-sized enterprises in the area of tourist destinations, as well as the promotion of authentic culture and tradition.
Due to the growing awareness of the global public about the importance of preserving the natural and cultural heritage of destinations, sustainable tourism has become increasingly important in recent years, especially among younger generations of tourists.
According to the latest research of the booking.com platform, more than three quarters of tourists want to directly experience sustainable tourism and accordingly plan their trips in the next 12 months, as stated in the UNDP Serbia text.
