Adventure in the Srem plain
Sremska Mitrovica is a city museum, one of the oldest cities in Europe, but also a destination with enchanting natural beauty. Discover and explore the Imperial Palace, a unique experience of history, the Museum of Srem, a time travel through antiquity and the Middle Ages, as well as the collection of wildlife that testifies to the development of the surrounding flora and fauna. For the end or the beginning of this tour there is the Zasavica Special Nature Reserve, a place where nature reigns, an oasis hidden from the fast pace of life.
Imperial Palace
An ideal tourist walk through this city takes you to the Imperial Palace from the Roman period with mosaics that decorated its unique interior. A unique experience of history awaits you there. That magnificent space, the collection of foundations of monumental rooms, represent the place from which Emperor Diocletian ruled the Roman Empire at the end of the 3rd century AD, and in the 4th century the palace in Sirmium was of greater importance than the Imperial Palatine in Rome. While in the palace, pay attention to the list of all the emperors who stayed in Sirmium, which is located to the right of the entrance.
Museum of Srem
After visiting the Imperial Palace, complete your experience of the ancient period of Sremska Mitrovica with a visit to the Srem Museum, which consists of two buildings. The historical display is located diagonally from the Imperial Palace, while the archaeological one with the lapidarium is located on St. Stephen’s Square. In the lapidarium there is an exhibition area of stone monuments, mostly from the Roman period, as well as a room of the urban villa (city hall) that extended below the museum area and the surrounding buildings.
Zasavica
In one of the most beautiful special nature reserves in Serbia, you will have the opportunity to visit untouched nature, unrepeatable in its authenticity and diversity of plant and animal species. The central place for tourists is the Visitor’s Center with an observation tower from which an unforgettable view of nature spreads all around. The animals you’ll see in the reserve are friendly to visitors, so don’t be surprised if the resident donkey decides to keep you company. Pet it and let the simplicity and modesty of being in nature completely dismiss all your worries.
